Lawmakers Pledge Bipartisan Effort to Rewrite NCLB/ESEA: President Barack Obama made education reform a key initiative in his State of the Union address January 25. Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA—formerly No Child Left Behind) is overdue by 5 years. Obama, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and the respective education leaders in the Senate and House have all pledged to work together to achieve reforms on a bipartisan basis. At a recent conference on education reform, Secretary Duncan expressed support for a “well-rounded curriculum that extends beyond reading and math to expose children to subjects like science, social studies, the arts, foreign language, environmental literacy and physical education.” Congressional policymakers hope to have a revised ESEA on the President’s desk by summertime.
