The 2011 PEP grant competition will be announced soon! Currently funded under a “Continuing Resolution”, the PEP budget will be the same in 2011 as it was in 2010. The PEP Grant application content will also be the same. Applicants are urged to read the application carefully and be sure to address all the relevant criteria.

PHYSICAL Act to be Introduced Soon: As he did in the last Congress, Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) will soon introduce the PHYSICAL Act, which would designate physical education and health education as core academic subjects. Visit the Legislative Action Center to learn more and ask your legislators to cosponsor this important legislation.

Lawmakers Pledge Bipartisan Effort to Rewrite NCLB/ESEA: President Barack Obama made education reform a key initiative in his State of the Union address January 25. Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA—formerly No Child Left Behind) is overdue by 5 years. Obama, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and the respective education leaders in the Senate and House have all pledged to work together to achieve reforms on a bipartisan basis. At a recent conference on education reform, Secretary Duncan expressed support for a “well-rounded curriculum that extends beyond reading and math to expose children to subjects like science, social studies, the arts, foreign language, environmental literacy and physical education.” Congressional policymakers hope to have a revised ESEA on the President’s desk by summertime.
